I completed my practice character from Darin Lile’s topology lessons and used CG Dives lessons on Blender’s Rigify system to rig and animate my first fully functional 3D character with facial expressions.

It took four weeks to learn and produce nine seconds of animation. That may sound slow to some, but for me this was a massive step forward as an animator. Experiencing the full character pipeline — modeling, weight painting, armature parenting, vertex groups, rigging, and animation — was honestly a dream come true.

Now it’s time to put these skills to the test.

Moving forward it’s time to set the lessons aside and start creating my own unguided experiences.

My next challenge: Design, model, rig, texture and animate an original stylized 3D character.

I’ve decided to revisit an old Alice in Wonderland, Mad Hatter character I designed decades ago but adding dark cyber punk elements to the theme.

I can do this.
